# Definition Surface states are electronic states found on the surfaces of materials. There are many types of such states, and they include [[Topological Surface State|topological surface states]]. When a material is terminated by a surface, there is a change in the electronic [[Band Structure]] from the bulk material to the vacuum. Electronic states are formed in this situation and they are found at the atom layers closest to the surface.
