# Definition The index of a [[subgroup]] is the total number of its [[Coset|cosets]]. This is given by the [[Group Order|order of the group]]/order of the subgroup, i.e. given $H \subseteq G$ where $H$ and $G$ are [[group|groups]], we have $ |G:H| = |G|/|H| $
